Case Study: Hands On Atlanta Day Identity
All year round, the volunteers at Hands On Atlanta open their hearts and lives to assist others in need of a helping hand. Volunteers are at work around the greater Atlanta area taking part in projects ranging from mentoring children who struggle academically, to spending much appreciated one-on-one time with nursing home patients, to feeding the homeless in shelters across the city.
Hands On Atlanta Day is the organization’s single most publicized volunteer opportunity and one of the most memorable events of the year, though the organization and its volunteers are at work year round. This year, an estimated 17,000 people are expected to come together to take part in over 200 projects benefiting the people of Metro Atlanta. Atlanta’s nonprofit and government agencies that are assisting Hurricane Katrina survivors will receive additional volunteer support this year.
When Hands On Atlanta first approached see see eye in 2004, the challenge was to create an identity for Hands On Atlanta Day that would send the message that the organization and its volunteer projects were year-round efforts. see see eye began with the organization’s familiar logo and added a “four seasons” theme, a visual reference to the fact that its work extended throughout the year. To further strengthen that message we created an accompanying tagline, “The 365th day in a year of service.”
For Hands On Atlanta Day 2005, the organization again wanted to incorporate its logo into the identity design and retain the “365th day” tagline to reiterate the message that Hands On Atlanta is about more than one day of volunteering, a fact still not widely recognized. Another important point the identity design needed to communicate was that Hands On Atlanta welcomes anyone, regardless of race, age, ethnicity, income or gender, to volunteer. To that end, see see eye incorporated images of volunteers from diverse backgrounds into Hands On Atlanta’s handprint logo, showing that people from all walks of life contribute their time and energy to make a difference in their community.
see see eye’s work for Hands On Atlanta Day includes three different pieces that invite both new and returning participants to be a part of the event. Postcards are mailed to volunteers and posters are placed at local restaurants, churches and stores. In addition, see see eye designed a microsite for the event. The microsite, located at www.handsonatlantaday.org, provides those interested in volunteering with a chance to see images of participants taking part in actual projects, a timeline of the day’s events, a section for frequently asked questions and contact and sign-up information. The microsite, postcards and posters get the message out about Hands On Atlanta Day so that anyone interested can take part in this incredible experience. And, of equal importance, the year-round contributions of Hands On Atlanta and its thousands of volunteers are recognized. |
